Siamo davvero felic* di annunciarvi che abbiamo vinto il bando e ospiteremo a Lucca, durante i giorni di Giungla, due performer: Merel Smitt (Olanda) e Daniela Pascual Esparza (Spagna/Finlandia).
Merel e Daniela parteciperanno agli eventi, visiteranno con noi la città e con noi parleranno delle tematiche di Giungla. Alla fine del loro soggiorno, creeremo insieme un progetto da poter sviluppare per la prossima edizione del 2022!
Non vediamo l’ora di accoglierle il 18 settembre e di vedervi tutt* all’Orto Botanico di Lucca il giorno seguente, per l’apertura del festival!
We have applied for the European call i-Portonus Houses, which favors the mobility of artists and professionals of culture in Europe.
We are really happy to announce that we have won the call and we will host two performers in Lucca during the days of Giungla: Merel Smitt (Holland) and Daniela Pascual Esparza (Spain / Finland).
Merel and Daniela will participate in the events, they will visit the city and talk with us about GIUNGLA themes. At the end of their stay, we will create together a project that we can develop for the next edition of 2022!
We can’t wait to welcome them on September 18 and to see you all at the Botanical Garden of Lucca the following day, for the opening of the festival!

Daniela Pasual Esparza (Helsinki, FL) e Merel Smitt (Rotterdam, NL) si sono incontrate durante una residenza a Copenhagen chiamata “Mapping The City” ospitata da Metropolis DK. Durante questo periodo hanno avviato un dialogo sul loro lavoro, invitando i partecipanti a scoprire la loro pratica e la loro metodologia basata sulla ricerca site-specific. Hanno trovato punti in comune e differenze abbastanza interessanti da continuare la conversazione l’anno successivo. Cosa che hanno fatto digitalmente attraverso diverse sessioni Skype con il proprio tempo e le proprie risorse.
Ora, insieme a Giungla Festival/S.O.F.A. hanno ricevuto una borsa di mobilità per esplorare ulteriormente una possibile collaborazione. Durante la residenza a Lucca, le artiste conosceranno il lavoro di S.O.F.A. in generale e Giungla in particolare. La partecipazione al festival le aiuterà a comprendere l’approccio dell’organizzazione ospitante e la sua collaborazione con l’Orto Botanico di Lucca. In dialogo con l’host, concepiranno una proposta congiunta per partecipare a Giungla 2022. Entro la fine dello scambio di mobilità, avranno un progetto preliminare che si evolverà e si trasformerà durante l’anno successivo.
“Questo scambio di mobilità ci dà la possibilità di esplorare ulteriormente le sinergie e trovare un modo per riunire i temi che abbiamo esplorato durante la nostra residenza a Copenaghen, oltre a rivendicare il tempo e lo spazio necessari per le nostre pratiche basate sulla ricerca in cui il processo di creazione è spesso protratto per un periodo di tempo più lungo. In quanto tale, fornisce le basi per una collaborazione a lungo termine più sostenibile in cui la ricerca non può essere separata dal risultato”.
Daniela Pasual Esparza (Helsinki, FL) and Merel Smitt (Rotterdam, NL) met during a residency in Copenhagen called “Mapping The City” hosted by Metropolis DK. During this time they exchanged their practices and started a dialogue about working site specific, inviting participants into their work and their research based work methodologies. They found overlaps and differences that were interesting enough to continue the conversation in the year after. Which they did digitally through several Skype sessions on their own time and resources.
Now, together with Giungla Festival/S.O.F.A. they received a mobility grant to further explore a collaboration. During the mobility exchange, the artists will get to know the work of S.O.F.A. at large and the Giungla festival in particular. Attending the festival will help them understand the approach of the host organization and its collaboration with Lucca’s Botanical Garden. In dialogue with the host, they will conceive a joint proposal to participate in Giungla 2022. By the end of the mobility exchange, we will have a seed project that will evolve and transform throughout the following year.
“This mobility exchange gives us the ability to further explore synergies and find a way to bring together the themes we explored during our residency in Copenhagen as well as claiming time and space that is needed for our research-based practices in which the creation process is often stretched out over a longer period of time. As such, it provides the foundations for a more sustainable long-term collaboration in which the research cannot be separated from the outcome.”
The i-Portunus Houses pilot scheme is implemented, on behalf of the European Commission, by a consortium of organisations that have been pioneers of European cultural mobility programmes themselves. Coordinated by the European Cultural Foundation (Amsterdam), the i-Portunus Houses consortium involves MitOst (Berlin) as main mobility implementer and the Kultura Nova Foundation (Zagreb) as lead in evaluation and analysis.
